2017 Ride of Silence May 17, 2017

Everglades Bicycle Club was a proud sponsor of the following community event

EBC invites and encourages cyclists to participate in this important event.

Video: Ride of Silence Miami 2009 video, presented by YouthNoise. Thank you YouthNoise for sharing this on YouTube.

On May 17, 2017 the Ride of Silence begins in North America and rolls across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here...)

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.

In Maria Luisa'a words..."WE can unite in a peaceful and organized fashion, work together and demand what is our right….. a safer Miami Dade County!! And a safer world!!! Remember without all of US….WE have no voice and there would have been no Ride of Silence Miami.

ONE DAY…ONE TIME… WORLDWIDE…our silence has spoken louder than any words could have!!!"

EACH and every one of you need do your part TODAY.

Contact your local officials requesting them to support expanding SAFE bicycling infrastructure.   Contact your state legislature requesting them to pass laws to prevent driviing when distracted.

Read Maria Luisa and Mike's 2015 thank you letter to all who have participated in the Miami Cycling Community and our efforts to help make a difference.
